how to read your bowl
You can hear a singing bowl. You cannot hear its exact note, or how pure it is. This tool shows you both, and reads them back in plain words after every strike.
Two ways to play. Strike the bowl with a mallet and it blooms, loud at first, then slowly fading. Run the mallet around the rim and it climbs into a steady tone that holds as long as you keep circling. Both wake the same bowl and sound the same note. Striking reads best here, because the meter can watch the whole ring rise and fall.
The note. Every bowl is built around one main tone, its fundamental, and it never rings alone. Stacked above it are quieter tones, the overtones, that give the bowl its colour. The meter splits the sound into all of its separate tones and draws each as a peak, tall for loud, short for soft. The lowest strong peak is your fundamental. The meter reads it to a fraction of a cent, as fine as a strobe tuner and with no second device, so you learn the bowl’s exact pitch. The peaks above it are its overtones, laid out to see.
The texture. Some bowls ring one clean, single tone. Others, often the finest, ring several tones at once a hair apart, so they beat against each other in a slow shimmer that makes the sound feel alive. Both are good, and both suit Somasonic; they simply work differently. The meter shows which you have: a single clean peak, or a cluster of close peaks with the beat between them. Frosted crystal leans clean and single. Hammered metal leans busy and shimmering.
Crystal or metal. Tell the meter which kind you have before you strike. A crystal bowl is meant to ring pure, so a lot of beating is worth noticing. A metal bowl is meant to shimmer, so the same beating is the mark of a fine, lively piece. The reading takes your answer in, so what it tells you fits the kind of bowl you have.
Which instrument it pairs with. The Witness and the Harmonizer are both built on a low G, so a bowl in G locks straight in. The Explorer plays in any key, so any bowl pairs with it. The reading tells you which of the three your bowl fits.
In plain words. After every strike the meter writes what it found in a sentence or two: the note and how in tune it sits, whether it rings clean or shimmering, how long it holds before it fades, and how many overtones colour it. You read your bowl without reading a single number.
Not only bowls. The meter reads the pitch of any clear tone, so it works for a ceramic or stone flute, an ocarina, chimes, even your voice. Switch to flute at the top and it drops the bowl talk. It tells you the note, the tuning on 432, how steady you hold it, and the harmonics that colour the sound. A flute’s overtones stack in whole numbers, where a bowl’s sit at their own odd intervals.
About the mic. Your laptop or phone mic works fine for the note. For the full overtone picture, and for the deep fundamentals of big bowls, a USB microphone or a small measurement mic reads more faithfully. Built-in mics thin out the lowest tones and add a little hiss.
